The Sentinelese people. Living on a small island in the Andaman Sea, between Burma and India, the Sentinelese are the most socially isolated people in the world. They violently reject all contact with other humans, and it takes months of gentle courting from afar before they’ll even accept a gift left for them. All observation is made from a considerable distance. They have developed sophisticated crossbows and some sort of game using an 8x8 board similar to chess. Nothing is known about their language. A helicopter observation in 2005 confirmed that they survived the Indian Ocean Tsunami to some extent.

Early attempts at communication consisted of leaving them gifts to see how they’d react. One such test involved a pig, a doll, and some coconuts. The pig and doll were stabbed repeatedly and buried, while the coconuts were eaten but not planted. Another test involved giving them different coloured buckets. The Sentinelese were delighted with red ones, but were completely ambivalent about green ones.

Occasionally, containers and other objects have washed up on the island, giving the Sentinelese their only exposure to metal objects. The contents of these containers appear to have been integrated into their society.

In 2006 two fishermen strayed too close to the island and were murdered. The helicopter sent to retrieve their bodies was driven away by a hail of arrows. It is unknown what happened to the fishermen’s bodies and belongings.
